Brake pads have a wear indicator — a small metal tab that contacts the rotor when the pad wears to ~2mm. That contact makes the squeal you're hearing. If you hear the squeal, the indicator is doing its job. You have time, but don't ignore it.
If you hear a grind — metal on metal — the pad is gone and the rotor is taking the damage. Now it costs more, because you likely need rotors too.

How do I know if it's pads or rotors that need replacing?
